Neil Armstrong is My Uncle..Birthday Bash and Giveaway!

My book is a year old this month! Time to party! The first year after a debut book launch is something to celebrate. It’s time for a giveaway:

Giveaway #1: Neil Armstrong is My Uncle... is a Society for Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators 2010 Golden Kite Honor Recipient. As part of that honor, I received a year’s membership to the association. But wait! I already am a member and expected to pay my way. (Frankly, it’s the best money I’ve ever spent). So I’m offering a one year’s membership to the SCBWI to another writer.

The first year I joined, some friends gave me a year's membership as a present. I can’t imagine a better gift. I’m certain I would have never been published if I hadn’t joined the SCBWI. It’s time to pay it forward and pass this on.

Giveaway #2: For those of you who are readers, kickball players, space enthusiasts, chocolate lovers, devotees of the 1960s or fans of Massapequa, there’s a Neil Armstrong Is My Uncle... gift basket --complete with a signed book, a slinky, tootsie rolls, a mini-kickball, a faux-Olympic medal, assorted book-related goodies, and some chocolates from Massapequa’s own Krisch’s Candy Store. Here’s my blog post on the walking tour in Massapequa if you want to see a picture of the amazing chocolates inside this store.

To enter this contest, you don’t have to post to Goodreads, blog, Tweet or anything (although.. you know.. no one’s stopping you from spreading the word). All you have to do is promise to howl at the next full moon (it’s something that happens in the story).
If you’re not sure how to do it, here’s a clip of my librarian friends saying “Arrooo!”
The next full moon is next Thursday, May 27, 2010. Winners will be chosen randomly on May 28th. Place a comment below. Make sure it’s not anonymous, of course. Let me know that you’re going to “arrooo” at that moon and you’re in the raffle. If you’re shy like me, you can ‘arrooo’ quietly. If you’re a writer (or thinking about writing) and want to also be included in the SCBWI one year membership giveaway, also include “SCBWI” in your comment.

I've been considering joining SCBWI lately, as my WIP is close to completion. This comes at the perfect time. You are so generous. Of course I'll howl at the full moon, and am happy to celebrate such a wonderful book's birthday!
Please enter me :)

SCBWI rocks! Arroooo! I LOVE YOUR BOOK.

You are right--I received a gift of an SCBWI membership last year and it was wonderful. I would not be published without their events! The first page sessions, mentoring workshops and conferences organized by the NJ chapter helped me to grow and improve as a children's writer.

I'm gonna howl and tell everyone about this contest because NEIL ARMSTRONG IS MY UNCLE is an AWESOME book! A must-read!

I'll be arooing on the 27th! Just went to my first SCBWI conference and am thinking about becoming a member.

Arooooo!!!! I'm howling already. Would love to win the gift basket ... and I promise to share with the kids if I win. Nothing, absolutely nothing belongs to me anymore. Not even a pencil ...

Hi Nan,

What a nice giveaway! Aroo! Love full moons & reading. I went to college on LI & not too far from Massapequa. Thanks for the NAIMU tour. (I'm already a member & ARA of SCBWI France and it is a great thing to do.)

Mike Jung said...

I WILL HOWL. In fact, I'll go one better - I'll SHOOT A VIDEO of myself howling, and post it on my blog if I win. Maybe I'll just post it anyway... I'm already an SCBWI member (and fully intend to harass you and say hi in LA, Nan), but I'd love to win the gift basket!

Have vocal chords, will howl! GREAT contest, Nan....

Hello, I am here to take this fantabulous prize away from Mike!

And I *always* arooo--it's what I do! I will arooo an especially vehement arooo for you.

Larissa said...

Yay! I can definitely aroooo. My kids'll love it. And my SCBWI membership is coming up for renewal! Perfect timing!

Mike Jung said...

HEY HEY, Susan is NOT taking this prize away from me. Nope. Not a chance. Right? Right, Nan? RIGHT? AARGH

Unknown said...

I'll howl too

nanmarino said...

Great. Thanks everyone. Thursday night could be a noisy night. :)
Mike, Susan threw down quite a challenge and it does seem like she has a lot of practice(since she says she always 'arrooos"). Can't wait to see your video.
Dana, I worked in a college on LI not too far from Massapequa. Wonder if it's the same one.

Arrooo! Now every time I see a full moon, I think of Kebsie and Tamara, and of course, Nan!

PAMELA ROSS said...

Oh Nan. What a gift YOU are.

Ironically, I just Googled to learn more about the upcoming cinematic re-telling of the obscenity trial surrounding Allen Ginsberg's HOWL. I am absolutely in the mood to howl at the moon For You. I'd do it just because you're nice. I wouldn't say no to winning whatcha gots but.... (Just trying to tawk Long Island and make you feel at home.) {} I've been a member of SCBWI for a number of years but I am not too proud to admit I did not pay dues this year. Two teens in the house who need my money more than I do. Cutting costs at every corner has become my crime of involuntary manslaughter. :{ Chalk it up to lack of financial flexibility. Talk about feeling guilt. Utter, ugly guilt.

I actually thought of you tonight. I swear. I was in the Book Revue and the image of me howling your name in vain, trying to meet you while you waited to meet Buzz Aldrin, flip-flopped flashed through my brain. {}

Happy birthday to your first bundle of joy, Nan. If I could lasso the moon for you, I would. {} You're a special person and I am so glad we met.

No lie. {}

Hugs from a little further east of Massapequa,
Pamela Ross

PAMELA ROSS said...

Did I mention I can't wait for Thursday the 27th to shock the dog and scare the neighbors and howl at the moon? I can't sing but oh can I aarrrrooooooo! This one has my name all over it!

nanmarino said...

Pamela, In South Jersey, there aren't enough people who tawk Long Island. Glad you (and NancyB) are gonna "arrooo".

Terry said...

I have it on my calendar, "Howl at Moon" on the 27th! If my husband wasn't worried about me before, he surely will be now.

I'd also LOVE to be included in the SCBWI giveaway contest...I've always chosen between attendance at the conference OR membership and the conferences have won out.

Congrats on your book's anniversary!

Amykated said...

Just the other day I was telling my husband that I wanted to go out and dance under the next full moon. Adding a little howling with it will make sure that the neighbors get a good show. (They probably already think I'm a little off my rocker.)Please include me in your contest.
Thanks!

cleemckenzie said...

Of course I'll "arooo" at the moon. I do that all the time anyway, so I'm very good at it. Really.

But I don't need to win anything. I've already read your book, I loved it, and I own it. I'm offering a comment just to say, "Give it to Mike." He loves to win. He hates to lose. Trust me on that one. :-)

Thea Miller Ryan said...

Thea is the Greek goddess of the moon, so I'm a howler anyway! I'll be there, howling for you this time! And, I'd love the SCBWI membership! Arrooo!

Mike Jung said...

Nan, LISTEN TO LEE - she's a smart woman, she is. Oh, I know, it's gonna be a random selection and all that. JUST THINK ABOUT IT.

Mindy Alyse Weiss said...

I can't wait to celebrate with you on the 27th. My girls and I will howl at the moon (it will be fun to see if our puppy joins in)!

It's so generous of you to offer the SCBWI membership you won as one of the prizes!

Llehn said...

I'll howl even without the bribe so it's a bonus if I get that gift basket as well :D

Nan, I used to climb out on my roof and howl at the moon all the time. Then I grew up, had kids, and started acting more sensibly. For you, I'll crawl back out there. ;)
Happy birthday, Nan's Awesome Book! I would love the book... or the SCBWI membership.

S.A. Larsenッ said...

No fear of growling, howling, or even scratching. Done. Enter, enter, enter. Congrats on the year B-day. "SCBWI", love to have it, but the book...heee, looks so fun.

Jennifer said...

Congratulations on your book's birthday! What a great pair of gifts to celebrate! (I'd love the book or the SCBWI membership since my budget tanked and I can't afford either now) I'll definitely be howling -- maybe the kids can join me!

Krysten Lindsay Hager said...

I would have been howling anyway ;) The SCBWI membership is a great idea & something I'd love.

RLeyva said...

How cool is this! I'm gonna aarroo-roo-roo, too! The basket idea is nice. I'm already an SCBWI member. Thanks for this, Nan!

I will howl at the moon as the chipmunks declare their sovereignty in my yard (Oh, yes, they're asleep by then--whew!). My SCBWI membership is about to expire, so the timing will be perfect if my name should be chosen. AAAA-MOOOOOOOOO; I mean, AAA-CHOOOOOOO; I mean AAA-WHO? (Please forgive--I'm in a weird mood; must be the phase of the moon.)

Alison Ashley Formento said...

I will arroooo! I own your book, too, and LOVE IT, but I know a librarian friend who would love that gift basket! Arrroooo!

anne Mazer said...

I love this! I've never had an excuse to howl at the moon before, but I think it's about time I did. Arrroooooo!

Nashville Photographer Ann-Marie Hensley said...

Nan, I am putting in my vote for Susan. As her older sister who shared a tiny bedroom with her for many years, I can verify that she arrooed quite often (that is when she wasn't writing and dreaming about arrooing).

Mike, I am afraid she may have you on this one.
I am sure I can dig up an old picture here somewhere...

nanmarino said...

Thanks for your comments everyone & for joining me in an 'arrooo' tomorrow night.
Yes, Ann-Marie, send pictures! Mike is making a video. Hmmm. This could be an interesting competition. Although in reality, the winners will be randomly picked by my librarian friends. But send pics, anyway :)

Nashville Photographer Ann-Marie Hensley said...

I am a photographer but this one was taken by my father many years ago...must have been a full moon.

I will tweet it out to you. Scared yet, Susan?

I would love to howl at the moon...and get an SCBWI membership (mine is about to expire). Thanks!

Here is to arroooing quietly...
Interested in SCBWI membership. I let mine lapse.
All best!

Congratulations on your Golden Kite Honor award, Nan!! That's fabulous news. I'll arroo quietly and I'd love to be in the running for the SCBWI membership (last year was my first year and it's almost time to renew).

So it's Susan J. Steward and her SISTER ganging up on me now, eh? Ladies, do your worst. My lackeys are combing through the libraries of the Eastern seaboard as we speak, searching out Nan's librarian friends, making arrangements for the so-called "random" selection. BRING IT

Arooooooo!!! have we been doing it out loud for a year. Congratulations on the Golden Kite...you rock and this one's for you...Arooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!

Wow! Your puppy looks like mine. Though after looking at other pictures, I think yours is smaller and darker.

Congrats on the one year anniversary and the Golden Kite! Hope to meet you in LA at the SCBWI conference.

Arooo! at the moon!

susanjsteward said...

He has lackeys. LACKEYS! Should I send my toadies after his lackeys or should I just let it be?

P.S.--Nan, our dad--the photographer who took that "arrooo" picture--is from Massapequa. :)

nanmarino said...

Thank to all of you for joining me.
SueFord, Chi looks dainty but she is about 80 lbs. She's quite large.
Mike, did you see Susan's last comment? Her father is from Massapequa (and he took a picture of them howling at the moon)
Susan J Steward, Massapequa? Seriously?

Lisa Schroeder said...

Hooray for SCBWI and your great book - Happy Book Birthday to you!!

Crystal said...

Congratulations, Nan, on the 1-year anniversary of your book! I would love, LOVE to win a membership to SCBWI!! And since my birthday's on the 27th, I can't think of a more FABULOUS present! Arroooo! :)

FredTownWard said...

Normally I try to avoid howling at the moon because it tends to end badly: accelerated hair growth, memory loss, and waking up with what you pray to God is sheep's blood on your muzzle...

face, I meant face!

However, since I'd really like to win a one year’s membership to SCBWI, I guess I'm willing to endanger the public one more time.

Nan,

Happy Book Birthday and congratulations on the Golden Kite. I don't know if I have the personality to openly howl at the moon, but I promise I will stub my toe Thursday and that will get me "arooing."

(Though you could save me from bodily harm if you bless this aspiring author with the membership to SCBWI.)

Mike Jung said...

Nancy Mercado just tweeted that she hopes to see a video of the winner! Naturally that puts me ahead of the pack to become the randomly selected winner, but y'all should give yourselves a chance and cover all the bases too. Do you really want to test the will of the universe by NOT making a video clip of your entry? Come on now. EVERYONE should film themselves howling at the moon and then post a link here. I dare you. I DOUBLE DOG DARE you.

Joyce Lansky said...

Hey, I'll awoo at the sun too for a free SCBWI membership or book packet. Please count me in.

Anonymous said...

Wow, it's been a year already? Happy Birthday, NAIMU!!

I'll definitely howl at the moon! AAARRRRRROOOOOOO!!

Chi is such a good dog :)

Put me in for the SCBWI membership as mine comes up for renewal soon.

Happy Book Birthday!
I will howl at the moon tonight.

Kathy said...

I had already planned to howl tonight - doesn't everybody howl at the end of May? School's over and it seems appropriate to let loose.
But I am also ready to celebrate your book. (Hey, I really know Neil Armstrong's niece...and her name is...well nevermind, that's not the point.)
I would love a membership in SCBWI so please count me it.

Lisa Gail Green said...

OMG what an awesome contest! You put me to shame. Congrats on the one year anniversary! I will definitely howl tonight. And I'll tweet, though I know there isn't a need. :) Oh and SCBWI!!!! I love it! I wouldn't know anything (well, anything too important) if it weren't for that organization!

Unknown said...

We already howl at the moon, too, lol. What a great contest. I love the idea of paying it forward (writer karma, if you will). Please include me in the contest for the SCBWI membership.

nanmarino said...

This is so much fun. I'm enjoying everyone's comments. Thanks.
Now I need to wait for this thunderstorm to end so I can go find the moon.

Am I too late? Aroooo! I've been considering joining SCBWI lately now that I'm almost finished writing my novel.

Mary Witzl said...

There was a full moon here last night and my husband and I bayed at it quietly -- is this retroactive, or will we have to do it again?

I won't win, but from what you've written here, I'm definitely going to shell out for a SCBWI membership the next chance I get. And I'll twitter about this too.
